Make Up

A lot of women are looking for make up ideas and techniques on what to do when they are applying it at home. It may seem difficult but with practice it becomes easy. Okay first of all your skin preparation is so important and a good skin care routine is necessary in order to get the best results with the look and feel of your make up.

How to Prepare Your Skin

  • Cleanse your skin first to make sure you have removed dirt and old makeup, you can use a wash of one, which is great of you have an oilier skin. You would wet your face first, then rub the cleanser in your hands so that it foams up and them wash your face with it, rinsing it with water to finish. A cream or lotion cleanser is great if you have a normal to dry skin. You would use this on dry skin, and apply it over your face just like the wash of one, but to remove it you would need to use damp cotton wool.
  • Toner is next to remove excess cleanser and dirt and it also temporarily closes the pores... This is quick and easy and use the appropriate one for your skin type.
  • Moisturizer to finish, again to suit your skin type. This makes a good base then for when you apply your make up.

So now that your skin is prepared you are going to have to add colour, so like an artist once you have the right canvas and background done then the painting can begin. So an area a lot of women have an issue with is foundation make up, so this is the first area I am going to talk about, the first of my make up ideas for you.

Foundation make up is a huge area with so much choice and dilema, first of is choosing the right texture and then the right colour. Also do you want it to last all day, do you want a heavy coverage or a light coverage, so many questions as you can see.

Let's look at colour first, it's amazing how you can go into a shop and see so much choice and yet you end up getting home sometimes with the wrong colour. Now one reason for this is the fact you are not sure of the colour that suits you.

A lot of women make the common mistake of testing the foundation on the side of their wrist, well the one problem with this can be the skin on the hand can be a totally different colour from the skin on the face.

So you need to test it on the side of your jaw and also be in good lightning, this is one of the best make up ideas I can give you as with the wrong foundation the rest won't be right. Okay so let's asume you have done the foundation test and it looks good as in there is no colour differe

Foundations come in different textures for example: Mattifying, Oil Free, Sheer, Flawless, Age Defying, Light Reflecting, Tinted Moisturiser and so on.

Companies use these phrases a lot. So what do they mean, well the mattifying and oil free are great for an oilier skin, taking away the shine.

Sheer, age defying and light reflecting are great for a more mature skin as they help to minimise showing lines especially around the eye area. Your sheer and tinted moisturiser are much lighter and won't give as good a cover as they are much lighter in consistency.

More make up ideas for foundation is how to apply it and what to use. I always use a latex sponge as opposed to my fingers as I personally feel it gives a much better finish, especially if you have scaring from acne or spots, a lot of women do suffer from acne and want a good heavier coverage as this gives them more confidence.

So the sponge is best I think. Then it is applying the foundation first onto the forehead, and making sure you blend it well and right into the hairline without being caked on.

So if you have the right colour etc this will be easily done. The result will be a look of not having foundation on but yet you have.

Then you just work your way down the rest of the face so that you have covered it all, some more good make up ideas is to be creative with the sponge, as in around the eye area you can dab the foundation into the creases and corners and this will make it a bit heavier in application.

Then you have no need for a concealer, and if you have any other areas on your face that you want to hide those imperfections then just dab and work the foundation onto the area.

And when you dab it do it lightly, it's a great effect and just keep practicing and you will get it.

More make up ideas also are do you want your foundation heavy or light and let's say you have bought a heavy foundation and you want a lighter consistency.

Then you simply wet your sponge, the opposite if you want it heavy, use the sponge dry. Also there may be times when you want a heavy look eg, a night dancing, a light look for daytime, work etc.

So you have lots of make ideas for foundation, so what next! well lets go for the eyes. This is a fun area, so much choice and eye make up ideas. Okay before you begin you need to look at your eye shapes and colours.

Once you know these then we can get to work with more make up ideas for the eyes. So one thing I want to say before you even start with eyeshadow is to prep the eye area first with loose powder as this stops the eyeshadow from creasing.

You have probably experienced this or seen it and it is due to surface oil on the skin, sebum. The powder stops this and your eyeshadow will stay put as long as you don't rub your eyes that is. I have done this so many times with brides and it works it staying intact all day and night.

So now you can decide do you want to go for a natural make up look or a dramatic look. Also do you want a matt eyeshadow or a frosted.

They will both give you a different look. Frosted tends to be better for the more mature person and matt is great to use if you want the "smoky eyes" look.

Now more make up ideas for eye shadow application is where to put it, do you cover just the bottom eyelid or the top eyelid or both , well that comes down to what you are comfortable with and what colours you use and your eye shape and size also is a big consideration.

Small eyes need to look bigger so being careful and using the right colours is important and my best advice is to use lighter colours , being careful with the darker ones. Big eyes can go more adventurous.

Sometimes it is good to apply your eyeshadow in this way if you imagine you want to make a "v" shape but rotate it on it's sideyou can apply the darker eyeshadow on the outer corner of the top and lower lid with the lighter colour in the inside and blend both with a good make up brush or sponge applicator.

Really start to experiment and have fun. More make up ideas for eyeshadow is to start mixing colours together for example I used to apply pink all over the bottom lid and then blue on the outer corners which went purple and it looked good i have to say with my blue eyes.

Take a look at my other page to see the images of the eye shapes which will help you understand where to apply the shadow.

Eyeliner is the same you need to be carefull where you put it and what colour you use, small eyes for example can look even smaller with black eyeliner, and also applying over the entire lid top and bottom makes them look even smaller.

More make up ideas for eyeliner area are experimenting with the pencil and liquid eyeliners, both have their benefits etc and both are not easy to apply but are with practice although you will really notice your mistakes with the liquid and especially if it is black.

I used to show the students at college I taught a few years ago this tip and that was to apply eyeliner all the way across one eye on both lids top and bottom and then on the other eye just applying it to the outer corners. Seeing it for yourself is better.

More make up ideas are about using blusher, some people like it some don't, there is a lot of choice also for example, cream or powder blushers, bronzers, highlighters, Sothys always bring out some good ones which are usually gold or silver or both combined.

Now when you are applying your blusher, make sure you have a good brush, quite big and flexible, prefably a sable brush made from pony hair as it is soft but rigid at the same time.

By the way it is always good to invest in good quality make up brushes a real must, I paid over £50.00 for my set and they have lasted me years.

.

The best way to apply your blusher is to smile and gently with upward flowing strokes colour the apple part of the cheek, the bit that just sits on the cheek bone.

Now a good technique to do is to measure, just place two fingers beside the corner of your nose, this indicates where the blusher should start so that it is not to close to your nose, otherwise "a blush becomes a flush".

More make up ideas about lipstick etc, now I always tend to use a lip pencil first, just covering the whole lip, this way if your lip stick comes of you will still have a bit of colour beneath.

Go round the entire lip and it is a good idea to have applied a bit of foundation to the lips before you use the lip pencil.

Then apply your lipstick using a brush, you can get right into the corners this way and it gives it a good finish, you know yourself at the end of the day what colour suits you and what you are comfortable with, however we can get stuck in a rut with the same old colour , so sometimes it is good to experiment.

A good tip here is to never go for a colour that sticks out like a sore thumb, it will really draw attntion to your lips, also if you have small lips pale, neutral shades are better, try not to go for bright and vibrant as it will make your lips look even smaller.

Now you can always jazz up your make up by using false eyelashes, which are available everywhere these days, some even have gemstones added to them and come in a great array of shades.

So there is a lot you can do, add a bit of sparkle to your eyes and face, jazz up your lipstick with some gloss, clear or sparkly, so many choices and so many companies to supply you with make up.
